The worship zone is located towards the east of the mountain and contains the architectural remains of temples and palaces. The most outstanding building is the great temple of Amon, which is located at the foothill of the “pure mountain”. With the arrival to the throne of the XXV Dynasty, the temple became the main religious center of the Napatan royalty. During the Meroitic period, it kept its relevance and new temples and palaces were built.
The Abasseya site is located about 600 meters north-west from the sacred mountain. Thus, it’s geographically linked to the worship area of Jebel Barkal. The distance in between contains several remains, which argues against the possibility of Abasseya being a complete independent zone. The large area covered by the Abasseya site, nowadays a plaza within a neighborhood of Karima, consists of four sectors, identified as A, B, C and D. Only Abasseya sector B, the largest and best preserved building, is visible today.
